Collaborating with the Orchestra of the Antipodes
One of the joys of singing with Sydney Chamber Choir is collaborating with musicians, composers, conductors and ensembles from all around the country. Our next concert for this year's season, Dixit Dominus, features the talented players of the Orchestra of the Antipodes.
One of Sydney’s finest period ensembles, the orchestra is perhaps best known for featuring in every Pinchgut Opera production since 2004; previous appearances also include Hobart and Brisbane Baroque, as well as a number of widely acclaimed recordings for ABC Classic FM.
The orchestra's members have played in ensembles around the world including Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, Florilegium, Concerto Copenhagen, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, The English Concert, the Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico, Les Talens Lyriques and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. An impressive CV indeed!
This year, as well as lending their talents to Sydney Chamber Choir’s Dixit Dominus program, the orchestra will appear with Pinchgut Opera in Haydn’s Armida and Handel’s Theodora.
Baroque orchestras feature a number of subtle differences from a traditional orchestra. The most notable is perhaps the use of period instruments – instruments made in the style of the time, rather than with modern methods. The intention is to try and recreate the original sound the composers would have wanted. Look for the differently-shaped bows of the strings in particular!
