Collaborating With Emerging Composers

As part of an Sydney Chamber Choir's ongoing commitment to new music and education, we have commissioned three young Australian composers – Josephine Gibson, Olivia Swift and Michael Paton – to write their own brief musical responses to Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame. The composition performances will be interspersed between movements, as part of our Carmina Burana Concert this Saturday, 7.30pm at City Recital Hall. 
 

Josephine Gibson

Josephine is currently studying Honours in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium, under the tutelage of Paul Stanhope. She has composed and acted as Music Director for seven productions at the University of Sydney, including the 2015 Arts Revue and the Sydney University Dramatic Society's 125th Anniversary production of Agamemnon. She has had works commissioned and performed by Gondwana Choirs and the Sydney Youth Orchestra, and in 2016 will have works premiered by Melbourne's Exaudi Youth Choir and Moorambilla Voices.
 

Michael Paton

As a student of Composition and Music Education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Michael Paton studies under the guidance of many acclaimed Australian composers, namely Carl Vine, Sandy Evans, Daniel Rojas, Matthew Hindson and Joe Manton. In that time, Michael has forged his way into the Australian music scene, having had his Saxophone Trio ‘The Quiet River’ performed by the Nexas Quartet for Fine Music 102.5’s 40th Birthday Concert in Town Hall mid 2015, as well as the opportunity to compose a Chamber Opera The Tale of A Rose under the guidance of Richard Gill and Michael Smetanin early last year.
 

Olivia Swift

Olivia is a composer and choral conductor currently completing her Masters with Paul Stanhope at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, researching contemporary madrigals. She is a graduate of the ANU School of Music, where she studied composition under Larry Sitsky and Jim Cotter. While her focus has been on classical composition, Olivia has also studied film scoring, jazz arranging and composition. 

Olivia has sung with both Gondwana Voices and Sydney Children's Choir, and currently sings with Canberra based octet the Luminescence Chamber Singers. Olivia is currently musical director of Kompactus Youth Choir, and is conducting a number of community choirs.
